So, as most of you already know, Yesterday President Obama publicy expressed his support of Marriage Equality in a very historic move. For most of us, this is some very exciting news as this hopefully signals a very dramatic turn torwards equality for all. To those of us who it affects, we feel that the President's stand is simply a "Stand for what is Right."
Apparently that is not how others are looking at this. True we have to look at the context of what was said in the President's interview, but why can't we just take it as face value. Why does his adversaries have to try to turn it around and make it about politics. One news organization even went as far to say the President has declared "War on Marriage". Wow, really? President Obama has always been supportive of LGBT issues as was evident of him ending "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and dropping federal support of the "Defense of Marriage Act". If you listen to the interview, he clearly states that this is his opinion. He also goes on to say that the individual states still have the final say on who is allowed to get married and who is not. So we still have a long way to go before we can truly have full marriage equality.
Now, I am not a total Obama supporter, but he is doing what no other President of the United States has ever done. That is my book was a very brave and noble thing to do. President Obama has alot to lose by making such a bold statement, and I believe that is why he didn't say anything sooner. I feel he took a stand because it is and will always be the right thing to do.
The debate has already begun and I am sure that this will have a very big effect on the presidential election. This issue will unfortunately divide the country, but I am hopeful that the divide will be more for the issue then against it. We are already well into 2012 and this should not even be an issue in this day and age, but unfortunately it is and we have deal with it.
Just yesterday, North Carolina passed an amendment to their constitution that would completly ban Same-Sex marriage in their state. What is interesting, it was already banned in that state. So are the re-banning same-sex marriage? I don't get it. Why does the majority have a say so in what affect a minority group? We are a very smart nation yet we still allow such ignorance to drive our policies. We have become a nation that no longer leads the world, and I am not even sure we are following either. We are so far behind other nations that we will begin to ask ourselves if we still want to be a part of this country.
I know religion will be brought into this argument, but last I checked religion is supposed to be seperated from the state. Some will say that we have lost focus on religion, but what we have instead is lost focus on the purpose of religion. Religion should be inclusive, not exclusive. We should love each other, not hate. Image what the world would be like if there was less hate? I don't claime to be any religious person but I do know that we don't follow everything that the Bible says. How can we pick and chose what we want to follow in the Bible? I will let Dan Savage debate that one.
